"That was a Dang Fun Class"-SafeSplash Swim School

A review from our family's perspective

By Vicki Little March 9, 2011

Editors Note: This is the second in a three part series on SafeSplash Swim School. Part one was an overview of SafeSplash swim school (you can find this here!) and part three will be a more in-depth look at this unique company.

My son is a little fish, always has been. He was excited from the beginning to go swimming, but I was hoping that he would learn more than he had in the previous classes he had taken at other locations. I knew from simply visiting the facility that it was unique, I knew my son would LOVE the warm water, and I knew I felt safe having him there. What I didn’t know was from the first lesson, I would see changes in my son’s swimming, and he would even be practicing his back floats in the bathtub!

I am impressed by the efficiency of the classes. They move along quickly, and the instructor is successful at keeping the kids moving along without having to keep telling them to behave, and each child gets plenty of one-on-one attention. Multiple methods are used during the class, and you can actually see your child’s progress from one week to the next. For example, in the first class my son seemed awkward and a bit scared. Now he trusts his instructor enough that she will not let him sink. As she is helping the other kids, I watched him practice his front floats, something he would never even consider before. The first two weeks, he would grab rings from the landing, sticking his head under but being cautious. Then I watched as he went all the way to the floor of the pool with his instructor. And then, in amazement, I watched him do it on his own, with minimal help from her!!!! I was amazed! In each class my son has been in, he has either learned or perfected at least one new skill.

In addition, my nephew has never been a huge fan of the water, but by the third or fourth week, we sat there and cheered as he jumped in the water, something that just one simple week before he refused to do. When he got his ribbon that indicated he “graduated” that level, you could see how proud he was!

SafeSplash also has a “show and tell” where the parents get to go in and see up close all the things their kids are doing. You could just see the giddiness and pride…..in both the kids and the parents. You get a chance to talk with the instructor and ask your questions on your child’s progress.

The caring of ALL of the staff is so apparent, and it is now a favorite place for my kids to just go. My daughter loves to take her quarters to the desk to buy her fruit snacks, and after the class, they both promptly go to get their suckers. The helpers in the pool area smile, laugh and make the children feel valued, even as they are wiping the snot from their little noses. (Yes, I was pretty impressed that everyone does this and I never saw anyone complain) I was touched last week to see that the General Manager knew exactly what flavor my son was looking for (which my husband didn’t even know, lol). All of the staff-whether they are a lifeguard, instructor or at the front desk, watch and praise the kids for the milestones that they reach. And the small touches are the best. My son got a card in the mail for his birthday which allowed him to pick his prize from the treasure chest! He still talks about that.

My son has been in multiple swim classes, but I can say with confidence that he has learned more in the past month than he learned in the past three full sessions at other locations cumulatively. I feel more comfortable than I ever have, and I feel that the money spent on these classes is actually going towards a lesson rather than simply some fun time in the pool. This is the only swim school I will use for my family, and as for my son’s opinion, he loudly stated “that was a dang fun class mom!”
