Colorado’s largest independent bookstore debuts first concept focused on kids in its 50-year

history, featuring immersive decor and an expertly curated collection of titles for young readers

AURORA, Colo. — Tattered Cover Book Store officially opened the doors of its first-ever children’s-focused concept, Tattered Cover Kids, at Aurora’s Stanley Marketplace (2501 Dallas St) on Saturday, June 26, 2021.

The 1,400-square-foot space was designed to evoke a sense of wonder and magic and foster a deeply rooted love of reading in Tattered Cover’s youngest visitors. Tattered Cover Kids’ centerpiece is an interactive tree, an homage to the often-larger-than-life nature found in storybooks. When visiting the store, children will be able to climb on the tree and enjoy storytime in its shade.

Additionally, Tattered Cover commissioned humanitarian artist Patrick Maxcy to paint an exclusive mural for space, which lends to the experience of a fantasyland and the excitement that comes from finding that perfect book. The mural is of a whimsical sky scene and offers children opportunities for discovery everywhere they look, with details and hidden imagery including flying fish, hot air balloons, paper airplanes, and more.

“We are beyond excited to debut this new concept solely focused on our next generation of readers,” said Kwame Spearman, CEO of Tattered Cover. “Stanley Marketplace offers the perfect environment for Tattered Cover Kids and we look forward to welcoming families from Aurora, Denver and beyond, for a memorable experience.”

Outside of the mural, the store’s design evokes a sense of comfort and familiarity with the remainder of its walls painted in Tattered Cover’s signature green, coupled with kid-friendly shelving. The concept is home to 4,800 titles for kids, as well as non-book items such as

Tattered Cover onesies, kid-sized tote bags, and other apparel; and locally designed wooden toys made by Begin Again.

In the upcoming months, Tattered Cover Kids will begin hosting kid-friendly events and programming like birthday parties, children’s authors and storytimes. Events will be listed at tatteredcover.com/event.

Mark Shaker, Founder and Chief Visionary Officer for Stanley Marketplace, said, “We’re thrilled to welcome Tattered Cover Kids to the Stanley Family; bringing the first-ever kids- and family-focused Tattered Cover concept to Stanley Marketplace dovetails exactly with our goals for Stanley: to create a warm, welcoming community gathering space that has something for everyone and at the same time supports local and independent business.”

The hours of operation for Tattered Cover Kids will be Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
