The Kindred Family has been blessed with three beautiful children, Cody (14), Abbi (9), and Madie (2).  If you are a family with multiple kids you know that each of the kids are very different.  That is where the Relay has come in and saved our lives.  Abbi is our very active child, after school and weekends she is riding her bike all over the neighborhood, playing with all the different neighbor kids.

Knowing were Abbi was at any given time was starting to become a challenge, because if the neighbor kid that she said she was going to play with was not home, she went to the next neighbor kids house.  This in turn ended up with me texting all the neighborhood moms, to track down Abbi.  Of course we tried to get Abbi to come home after each time a neighbor kid wasn’t home to let us know the next place that she was going to.  With any 9 year she would forget or see another friend out and start playing.  Needless to say we got frustrated.

My husband and I started to talk about getting Abbi a cell phone.  This is something that we did not want to do, we did not want our 9 year old to have a cell phone simply to make our lives easier, because then she would spend time on the phone instead of hanging out with friends.  We tried walkie talkies, this again did not work as she could only go so far, before they stopped working or sometimes another person would come on the channel.  This kinda creeped me out as we did not want her talking to strangers.  We felt like our only option was a cell phone.

Then we introduced to Relay which is a screenless device that functions off of cell service, that is designed to help families feel safe about their children being independent, however being able to connect to them.  There are apps that can be added to device; joke of the day, music and more to come.  When we first got the device we were excited to try something out that would allow us to contact Abbi, however without being a phone.

One of our most loved features is the GPS location finder, this feature rocks. Just last night I wanted to find out which house Abbi was at, as she has friends that live right next door to each other and she was not responding to the voice calling, I used the GPS link on my cell phone and it gave me the exact address of where she was at.  We have also used this feature when she has gone to the park with her friends and we are trying to figure out which way she went the GPS will tell us the streets she passed to get to her location.

The other feature that lucky we have not had to use is the SOS, which she pushes a button on the device and it alerts my cell phone of the SOS call.  On my phone it tells me her exact location of when she pushed the SOS button.  This is a great feature if she were put into a situation that she could not call me and needed to get a hold of me.  We hope we do not have to use this feature.

If you are sitting on the fence of getting your kid a cell phone, check out Relay!  They are $49.99, the monthly service is $9.99 per month.  The cell range works wonders, you can use state to state or I was in Mexico and had Abbi calling via Relay.  Check out this great device to keep in contact with your kid, you will not be disappointed.
