Luzia Review

Amazing is not enough to describe this show!

By Kristin Kindred June 19, 2017

Incredible to watch a dream come to life with such surrealism and imagery. Luzia allows for the main characters dream to come to life with such detail that while watching you cannot wait for the next scene to come. An amazing show that you do not want to miss.

The dream starts out with a beautiful Monarch butterfly and as the journey progresses you get to see the butterfly move through this journey in many different ways. The costume of the butterfly is absolutely stunning and looks so life like it’s unreal. The butterfly makes multiple appearances throughout the show, sometimes she becomes the focus and other times she is just a presences. She often helps with transitions of weather or day/night. The butterfly’s role is integral throughout this dream.

Luzia is based in Mexico and throughout the show connects many things back to the culture of Mexico. The band that shows up throughout the show and the singer sings in Spanish, the sounds and the language is truly beautiful. Spanish music truly has love and passion that lights up your soul. This is one of those times that I wish I understood Spanish so I could understand the beautiful words they were singing.

One of my favorite parts throughout the show was when the water was introduced by the butterfly, in the water scenes it gave life to the show as well as showed cleansing of one scene to the next. Words escape me on how to describe these scenes they put me in a trance and gave life to my soul.
Throughout the show, there are so many talented individuals that have talents that are beyond incredible. The talents that these individuals have go behind dedication and determination it is truly a part of their life and have honed in their skill.

Behind the Scene Information:

We were lucky enough to go backstage and find out even more about the show. In Luzia there are 45 members of the show production and 75 crew members to put this show together. The show set-up takes 7 days to set-up from beginning to ready to perform. The show started on the road in April 2016, prior to being on the road it roughly took 2 years from concept to putting it on the road to get everything together. This show will be performing for 10 to 12 years, they are constantly adjusting the show and making it better as they go. In most cities the show runs from 5 weeks to 3 months, it will be in Denver for 5 weeks, so you do not want to miss this. This is the first Cirque du Soleil show that has water and they use about 600 liters of water that they recycle for every show. The costumes for the show are all handmade and they have a backup costume for every character. The costumes originally start out white and they had paint or stamp the designs that they want on them. Often times the shoes are made from scratch as well, other times they find a shoe that they love and just adjust it to match the costume. They have costume designer on staff for the shows to help keep up with the costumes. The actors practice their skills weekly in the training tent. Some of the actors have been working on their skills since they were 4 years old. On June 16th Cirque du Soleil celebrated their 33rd Anniversary! They look forward to creating many more shows.
