Turkey Gobbler....a craft and a fun activity!

By Vicki Little November 9, 2011

Items needed:

  • SOLO plastic cup
  • Basic plain kitchen sponge
  • Crotchet String
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Modge Podge
  • Construction Paper (at least one yellow or orange piece for the beak)
  • Tissue Paper
  • Googly Eyes
  • Red Pipe Cleaner
  • Foam Paint Brush

To make the caller:

1.  1 SOLO plastic throw away drinking cup

2.  With a sharp object poke two small holes in the bottom of the cup, about half an inch apart. I used the poker that came with my pumpkin carving kit.

3.  Take a line of crochet string about 16 inches long

4.  Thread each end of the string through one of the wholes.

5.   Get a new basic kitchen dish sponge (the thin ones, nothing fancy on them) and cut off a piece about an inch wide. Me

6. Tie the strings to the middle of the sponge.

To decorate the caller:

1. "paint" the outside of the cup with glue. Put small pieces of colored tissue paper on the glue (all around, including the top)

2. Use Modge Podge and paint over the top of the tissue paper. (if you don't have modge podge, just mix even amounts of tacky glue and water)

3. Cut out feathers and glue to the back of the cup

4. Glue googly eyes, a beak make out of construction paper, and the wattle made out of red pipe cleaner on the front of the turkey.

And then the fun begins!

Dampen the sponge. Wrap the damp sponge around the string, squeeze the sponge in between your thumb and middle or pointer finger, and pull the sponge down the string in quick jerks. Your kids will be amazed that their turkey can actually gobble!
