Have you ever really thought about the role that a teacher plays in your child's life? We drop our kids off or watch them leave the house with a hug and kiss and hope that they have a great day. When they get home we ask them how it was, we ask what homework they have and if it was a good or bad day. But the answer we get back, if any, is just a slice of their school hours.

Their teacher gets the opportunity to see a lot more of what happens. They see them when they get into a little squabble with a friend. They see their smile or frown when they get a graded paper back, they see the effort they put into a test or a project, and they can watch their work progress daily through the year. They know if they are having a good day or bad, they know what motivates them to try harder, they know what their hardest subject is and their easiest. And, as my son's teacher does, they know if they are having an off day the second they walk in the room.

Teachers are there to teach, this is true. We expect our children to grow while in their care. We expect that they will learn to read, write, do math and science. But do we truly appreciate them for the little things that they do that really aren't so little?

They teach social and life skills, how to treat and respect people. They wipe tears that need comfort when we are not there, they cheer at accomplishments we don't hear about until later, and they encourage the children to dream and hope and plan. They are the parent when we are not there.

Teacher appreciation week is over, but it always hits me this time of the year how much impact my children's teachers have had on them. Maybe it hits me because in just a week or so, those children will be at my house all day long. No wonder there is so much learning loss in the summer, there is no way I can squeeze all that education and life into 7 hours every day!

Have a wonderful and hopefully dry week!
Vicki
