HAUNTED HOUSES, FRIGHTFUL FILMS, & SCARES FOR FAMILIES

Here is the scoop on the chills and thrills of Halloween! A select few are appropriate for younger children but most are VERY SCARY and NOT recommended for the younger set. Age recommendations noted wherever possible.

SPOOKS AND SCARES FOR FAMILIES

Castle Rock Ghost Tour (Downtown Castle Rock)
Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with family-friendly tours at 7:00 PM and night owl tours at 8:30 PM. This is an all walking tour around downtown Castle Rock. Hear the haunts and history of Castle Rock on this all walking tour around downtown. The tour begins in front of the Old Courthouse at 301 Wilcox Street. Adults: $10; children under 10: $5.

Haunted Forest (Backcountry Wilderness Area, Highlands Ranch)
October 24-25 from 7:00-10:00 PM. The darkness of the forest hides the horrors lurking in the trees and the shadows. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online, at any HRCA Recreation Center, or at the gate. Recommended for 10 and older; parental discretion advised.

Haunted Trail (Castlewood Canyon State Park, Franktown)
October 11-12 from 7:00-9:00 PM. Head to the 4th Annual Haunted Trail event, where you and your family can share a frightening good time after hours! Go for a guided walk along the haunted trail and enjoy a hayride. This is a free family-friendly event, appropriate for all ages.

Lights On Children's Tour (Reinke Brothers Haunted Mansion, Littleton)
Saturdays and Sundays from September 26-November 2, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Over 30 rooms of Hollywood-type sets created by seasoned professionals. Tickets are $7.


HARROWING HAUNTS ... NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY

The 13th Door (Aurora)
Open nightly October 3-November 1, with a special preview weekend September 26-27; hours vary. The 13th Door was voted one of America's Top 13 Haunted Houses three years in a row. General admission: $20.

The 13th Floor (Denver)
Open most nights September 26-November 2 plus a special blackout weekend November 7-9; hours vary. Called one of the best by The Travel Channel, Hauntworld Magazine, MTV, and USA Today. General admission: $25-$29, depending on day selected, and allows access to both attractions.

The Asylum/Primitive Fear (Denver)
Open most nights September 26-November 2; visit the website for schedule. Voted one of the best haunts in the country by HauntWorld.com in 2011, 2012, and 2013 AND named one of the Top 10 Scariest Haunted Houses in the US by the Discovery Channel, only the truly brave should enter these doors! General admission: $25 for both houses.

Castle of Terror: The Asylum (Castle Rock)
October 17, 18, 24, & 25 from 7:00-10:00 PM (last tour starts at 9:45). "Welcome to Your Nightmare" if you dare ... everything that scares you will be inside. Tickets are $10 at the gate (cash or check only). Under 13 not admitted without an adult.

City of the Dead (Denver)
Open September 26-November 1; days and hours vary. City of the Dead is Denver's largest and most intense indoor haunted house. It was voted "Best Haunted House in Denver" by HauntedRatings.com and ranked Top 5 nationally by suitetrip.com. General admission (includes three attractions): $23 online; $25 at the door. Not recommended for children under 12.

Curse of Slaughterhouse Gulch (Aurora)
Open nightly October 3-November 2, with a special preview weekend September 26-27; hours vary. There are a lot of Haunted Houses in Denver, but this one takes fear to a whole new level. Has been voted "Denver's scariest haunted house" by Rocky Mountain News readers.

Dead Zone Haunted Maze (Littleton)
Open October 3, 4, 10, & 11, then nightly October 17-November 1; hours vary. The Dead Zone haunted maze is a 3-acre maze separate from the regular 8-acre maze at Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield. Patrons must make their way through the Glow Maze to the Dead Zone entrance. Ticket price of $22 includes the Glow Maze adventure with a glow stick and entrance into the Dead Zone haunted maze. Not recommended for young children.

Fright Fest at Elitch Gardens (Denver)
Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays from October 3-November 2; hours vary. Celebrate Halloween in Denver with two haunted houses, seven live shows, the hottest roller coasters, and the coolest attractions. family by day ... FRIGHT by night! (Note: The haunted houses are an extra-charge attraction and not included with park admission.)

The Frightmare Compound (Westminster)
Open nightly October 2-November 1, with a special preview weekend September 26-27 and a bonus weekend November 7-8; hours vary. Rated Colorado's #1 haunted attraction for 30 years, this place will scare the bejeezus out of you! General admission (includes both houses): $25. Not appropriate for kids unless you want them sleeping in your bed for the next decade.

Ghosts in the Garden (Denver)
October 17-18 & 24-25 at 9:00 PM PM. Denver Botanic Gardens dares you to join the annual Ghosts in the Gardens Tours. Guides will lead you through one of three tours with haunting stories of the Gardens’ 100 years of history and points of interest around what used to be called “The Boneyard.” Each tour includes actual staff ghost stories and encounters and intriguing history. For 12 and older. Members: $23; Non-Members: $27.

Haunted Adventure at Miller Farms (Platteville)
Nightly October 10-31; from dark till 10:00 PM with reservations. Due to the recent flooding, a mysterious Swamp Monster has made a portion of the farm its new home and has taken refuge in the dark and scary corn maze! Cost is $10 per person or $5 per person if you paid for the Fall Harvest Festival and stay for the evening's activities. Half the proceeds go to the Colorado flood victims.

Haunted Hayrides (Stockton's Plum Creek Stables, Littleton)
Take a 30-minute hayride and hear a story as you rumble down a spooky trail inhabited by Indians and six-gun carrying cowboys. Adults: $14; Children 12 and under: $12. Recommended for teens and older children who don't frighten easily. October 24-25 from 6:00-8:30 PM.

The Mausoleum (Littleton)
Dates and hours for 2014 coming soon. Voted "Best New Haunt" in 2011. Brought to you by the twisted minds at MGM Haunts with new scenes, more scares, and more terror. Admission is TBD. NOT a family-friendly haunt; use parental discretion!

Paranormal Party (Highlands Ranch Mansion, Highlands Ranch)
One night only ... join the professionals from Spirit Paranormal Investigations at the famous Highlands Ranch Mansion for cocktails and a presentation of “Things That Go Bump in the Night” including amazing photos and samples of real recorded spirit voices. Afterwards the Spirit PI team will lead groups on an actual ghost hunt in the mansion using their sophisticated equipment. Thursday, October 16 at 6:00 PM. Advance tickets: $30; Day Of: $35.

Reapers Hollow Haunted Maze (Flat Acres Farm, Parker)
Open 7:00-10:00 PM on select nights in October. For the scare of your life, come to the outdoor haunted corn maze. If daring enough this terrifying trail will take you on a 20-30 minute trek through the corn and adventure through the woods. Tickets: $15. Under 13 not admitted without an adult.

The Reinke Brothers' Haunted Mansion (Littleton)
Open nightly from September 26-November 2; hours vary. Over 30 rooms of Hollywood-type sets created by seasoned professionals at "Denver's oldest haunted attraction." Tickets: $15 (print this coupon for $2 off).

Scream Acres (Fritzler Corn Maze, La Salle)
Open September 26-November 1; days and hours vary. Nestled among the winding pathways of the Fritzler Corn Maze, Scream Acres is one of Colorado’s best haunts, filled with special effects, mechanical engineering, and eerie sound technology. Haunted Combo Ticket: $20; Haunted Combo Ticket plus Haunted Paintball Zombie Slayer: $35.

Spider Mansion (Golden)
Open nightly from September 27-November 2. Located in Heritage Square, hours vary. Under 7 MUST be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are TBD (print this coupon for $1 off).

Terror in the Corn (Anderson Farms, Erie)
Weekends from September 26-November 1, starting at 7:00 PM. In addition to a Fall Festival, Anderson Farms hosts a Terror in the Corn and Zombie Paintball Hunt. Tickets: $20; Combo Ticket: $35. Tickets includes the Fall Festival. Not recommended for children under 7.

Tour of Terror (Littleton)
October 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, & 25 at 10:30 PM. Enjoy a spooktacular three-course fondue experience at The Melting Pot. Colorado Shadow Investigations will share some of their best ghostly captures and then take you on a ghost hunt through the restaurant using state-of-the-art equipment. $50 per person (includes tax and gratuity).

FRIGHTFUL FILMS

The 5th Annual Mile High Horror Film Festival will take place at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Littleton. This is an adults-oriented theater. No children under the age of 6 will be admitted; ages 6-16 will only be admitted with a parent or guardian. Purchase your tickets online before they sell out!
