Welcome to Macaroni Kid Aurora

April 10, 2014
Our kids are good at pleasantly surprising us. They are exceptionally kind at an unexpected moment, they get a great grade at a test we were afraid they would fail, they are lovingly cuddly and sweet when we are sick. What I really love, though, aren't just these little surprises but the small moments and lessons my kids and I share. One of my favorite new traditions happens at the library with my daughter. We have always gone to the library, at least once every other week, but since my son has been at school my daughter and I end up heading there on our own sometimes. A few months ago my daughter didn't want to go to the children's section alone, so we went to get my books first. She was a bit impatient so she started choosing books for me herself. The first few times, I will admit that I wasn't really interested in any of them. They didn't seem like my style of book, but I put them in the bag to keep her happy-she was SO pleased to help me. And then I just read them because I had them. There has only been ONE book in all that she has chosen for me that I didn't enjoy. These are far better odds than the amount of books that I have chosen and didn't end up enjoying as much as I thought I would. Through her choices I have even acquired a few more favorite authors!

So now, I try to remember to listen and give my kids the benefit of the doubt. Even today my son came up with a craft that we all enjoyed. It was fun and silly and cute (and as a bonus it is included in this article!) So try it...you pick your kid's books and let them pick yours. You may be surprised!
