Almost everyone has heard the expression that people come into your life for a reason, season, or lifetime. The tricky part is that you don't know which category someone falls into until much later. There are many reasons that friendships come and go, some of them painful and some of them happen before you even realize the friendship is over.

My kids participate in so many different activities that I often find myself in situations to meet new people. It is amazing how some people seem to be everywhere I go, our paths crossing in many random places. Many times the conversation is nothing more than a nod and a smile, sometimes we share life stories like we are old friends chatting over a bottle of wine.

But even those mere acquaintances often have an impact on my day. Usually they are mothers that can see in my eyes or posture that the day has been rough and I am down on myself. Their smiles are more sympathetic, their words kinder, their expressions understanding. And sometimes their smile is the only thing that brightened my day. Sometimes it even manages to change my whole week.

So if your day is going fairly well and you have a smile to share, consider giving it to someone new. You never know when you will meet the friend of a lifetime!
